Hello, CBGLers! Welcome to the 2017 summer Craft Beer Golf Leagues. If you are a returning CBGLer, we're glad to have you back, and for the newcomers, we're happy to have you joining us! Each week, I'll write a blog post highlighting the various beers available for prizes, on-tap, tastings, etc. I'll also highlight one of the beers that will show up at the private Rare Beer Dinners that will be held several times throughout the year. Make sure you check in on the GolfStatus app every week for a chance to win a spot at one of the dinners.
We have a few great sponsors this year that are helping make all of this happen. Moran's Liquor Works returns as the bottle shop sponsor for pin prizes. Each week, they'll be providing one special bottle to each league, plus a Growler Pro Kit, which comes with a discount of 20% off your first growler fill in their taproom. K&Z Distributing is another returning sponsor, taking care of all of the on-tap options and tasting for the Highlands league. Quality Brands of Lincoln is a new sponsor this year, and they will be covering the beers for the Holmes league.
Now for the fun stuff. Our bomber pin prize from Moran's this week will be Nightmare On Brett from Crooked Stave out of Denver. Crooked Stave is famous for their world-class sours and saisons. Nightmare On Brett is a series of dark sours, aged in various barrels, and varying fruit adjuncts. The version I chose for the pin prize this week is aged on Leopold Bros. whiskey barrels. This comes in with a 96 rating on beeradvocate.com, and is one of the best-regarded beers from a company with a long list of world-class beers. You will find tastes of sour cherry, plum, raisin, and oak and whiskey flavors from the barrels. If you aren't familiar with sour beers, you might want to save this one to drink with a friend or two.
Our Rare Beer Dinner check-in sweepstakes beer of the week is an imperial coffee stout, aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Kentucky Breakfast Stout (better known as KBS) from Founders Brewing is consistently rated as one of the finest barrel-aged stouts in the world. KBS is typically released on April Fools Day every year, and frequently requires a waiting list. The biggest beer nerds among us have been known to follow the distributor around on delivery day to make sure we can get our hands on some.
For our Highlands league this week, K&Z will have Leinenkugel Summer Shandy on tap. They will also be bringing variants of Shandy for tastings. As the name would suggest, their Shandy line is a great, light beer for the warmer months of the year. It's a Weiss style beer, with various fruit flavors.
At the Holmes league, Quality Brands will have a selection of beers from our local Blue Blood Brewery. On tap in the clubhouse, we'll have All Hopped Up IPA. This one has a nice fruity and piney hoppiness from the use of four different hop varieties. On the beer cart, we'll have cans of Kompagnon Kolsch and Dank-a-licious IPA. Kompagnon is a German-style Kolsch that is light and bready, with hints of citrus. Dank-a-licious is a very hoppy IPA with three kinds of hops, and notes of citrus. There will also be the opportunity to win some Blue Blood swag.
Have fun out there! I hope we can help introduce you all to some new favorite beers this summer.
